Sirf Tum is based on the Tamil film Kadhal Kottai (The Postman), which was also directed by Agathian and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. The film was remade in Bengali as Hothat Brishti (Suddenly It Rains) in 1998 and in Kannada as Eno Onthara (What Is This) in 2010.
The film revolves around Deepak (Sanjay Kapoor), a young man who works as a cable operator in Delhi, and Aarti (Priya Gill), a young woman who lives with her aunt in Nainital. They are introduced to each other by a common friend, Neha (Sushmita Sen), who works as a radio jockey in Mumbai. Neha sends a letter to Aarti along with a jacket that belongs to Deepak. Aarti writes back to thank Neha and mistakenly addresses the letter to Deepak. Deepak receives the letter and is intrigued by Aarti's words.
