Plot
The film revolves around the lives of four different people who meet at a coffee shop on a rainy day. Ajay (Aari) is a wannabe filmmaker who is waiting for his girlfriend Renu (Shubha Phutela) to join him. Renu is a software engineer who is unhappy with her married life and wants to divorce her husband. Meanwhile, the coffee shop manager (Sathish) is facing financial troubles and is worried about his future. He is also in love with a waitress (Tejaswini) who works there. The fourth person is a middle-aged man (Balaji Venugopal) who is a regular customer of the coffee shop and likes to narrate stories to anyone who listens.

The film was initially titled as Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi, which was later changed to Maalai Pozhudhin Mayakathilaey. The film was produced by Mayuri Sekar under the banner of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Creations. The film was shot in Chennai and Pondicherry. The film marked the debut of Aari and Shubha Phutela in Tamil cinema. Shubha Phutela died of jaundice in October 2012, a few months after the release of the film.
Music
The music of the film was composed by Achu Rajamani, who also made his debut as a music director with this film. The film had six songs, which were written by Rohini, Thamarai, Narayan Nagendra Rao, and Achu Rajamani. The songs were sung by Karthik, Haricharan, Chinmayi, Ranjith, Achu Rajamani, and Ramya NSK. The soundtrack album was released on June 27, 2012 by Sony Music India.
