Horses
All animals, other then specified, are owned by Mike and Liz Carlson. They are leased for use to Freedom Horse.
Three of the horses in the program are from Horse Rescues. This allows the discarded horse to have a new life and home and not end up in slaughter. They can be retrained and become a lifelong friend and family member. Please visit these sites for more information and see the horses that have been rescued and looking for a new home. These and other rescues work to put an end to horse slaughter.
http://www.angelacreshorsehavenrescue.com/ - Freedom and Bella were adopted from this organization. They are a Throughbred Horse rescue saving these animals from slaughter.
http://www.adoptahorse.org/ - Nitro was adopted from this organization.
http://www.horsefellas.com/ - They also rescue from the slaughter. This site has graphic pictures on horse slaughter.

Rachael wanted him to move on to a new career and decided that working at Freedom Horse would suit him. Rachael will continue to help us in his transition from show horse to therapy horse. She will be there for him and us! We are grateful for the Glicklick family in choosing Freedom Horse as the new home for Ashton. He is a wonderful addition to our family.
Sam - Standardbred Horse
Sam is a retired race horse that has been used for lessons and parades. He was given to Mike and Liz Carlson when his owner could no longer care for him and they did not want to see him misused or abused. He is what is known as a "bomb proof" horse. He is used as the primary beginner lesson horse and in Hippotherapy.
Freedom - Thoroughbred Horse- In Loving Memory - 1989 - 2009 - "May you gallop freely forever"
Freedom has passed on and will never be forgotten. He is missed by his family and friends, both human and equine. We know that he is watching over his herd and will be their guardian angel. Farewell Freedom, Until we meet again........
Freedom is a retired Steeple Chase horse. After his career he was sold to an owner who did not care for him properly. He was hit across his head with an object that has left prominent bumps on him. Angel Acres Horse Rescue was able to rescue him and he was then adopted by Mike and Liz Carlson. His racing name was Hotel/Notel. Mike and Liz changed his name to Freedom. He finally has the freedom to be a horse and only know kindness and love. He is a kind and gentle sole who just wants to please. He has passed his evaluation for being used for Therapeutic Riding and is used for beginner and intermediate lessons.
Nitro - Standardbred Horse
Nitro is a retired race horse. His racing name was Prairie Nitro. He was adopted by Mike and Liz Carlson from the Standardbred Retirement Foundation. He is a kind horse who loves to stand for hours to be groomed and bathed. Nitro will be used as a touch therapy horse as well as for grooming lessons. Nitro will only be used for riding for experienced riders. He is currently in training for Hippotherapy.
Valentine - Arabian Horse
Valentine, also know as Val, had a cushy life and knows it. She is an Egyptian Arabian. Liz Carlson was taking riding lessons at a facility where Valentine was boarded. Val's owners were "absentee" owners and for a year did not visit, groom or pay board for her. The owner of the facility took Val's prior owners to court and was awarded the horse in lieu of outstanding board payments. Val was then offered to Liz for a reasonable fee. She is her first horse and holds a special place in her heart. She taught her to ride and how to hold on!! She is used for experienced riders only.
Darma - Miniature Donkey
Darma does not know that she is a donkey. She is a donkey with her own mind and will let you know when something displeases her by shaking her head. She loves to be groomed and bathed and will be used for grooming lessons. Darma is not used for riding.
Pepsi - Appendix - (Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred Horse) Owned by Ashley Woodman
Pepsi is a horse that was purchased for Ashley when she was 12 to teach her how to ride. Pepsi took great care teaching her how to ride. Ashley is all grown up and in college. She wanted others to meet this special horse and have him teach them how to ride. Pepsi loves his human friends and is very patient and understanding as new riders learn how to become partners with horses. Pepsi will be a great asset to our program. He will be used for all riders from beginner to experienced and is used for Hippotherapy.
Bella - Pony
Bella is a pony that was also adopted from Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue. They normally don't rescue ponies, however when I contacted them to find out if they could find us a pony... they already had one!! Jo the President of Angel Acres went to the auction and saw a little black pony being ridden. Thinking that she was "safe" from the killer buyers, she approached the seller again and asked about her and was advised that his trailer had problems and that a killer buyer had made a group deal to purchase the trailer load and Bella was one of them!!! Jo (in her own words), "I went NUTS and bought her right there". Bella is an ex hack pony from a camp. She is working in the Hippotherapy program and is in training for Therapeutic Riding and Able Bodied Riding. She is a very sweet and curious pony and is a valued addition to the Freedom Horse Family.
Cherokee - Pony
Cherokee out with her buddies!
Cherokee is our easiest keeper of them all! She is totally bomb proof and does not require any shoes. She stands very still and is very patient with all her lessons!! Cherokee is used as an introduction to horses and children learn how to groom her. She is also used in Hippotherapy for students who may need some stretching before actually being on a "moving" horse.
